A video must always be closed-captioned and have a transcript. If it is not, it is inaccessible.

The purpose of this template (based on the insights template) is to feature a video as a piece of intellectual capital.

If a video is the primary content of the page, use the full-column (full-width) display of the video to ensure that it is visually prominent for the user. There’s no reason to place it in a small column when it is the content featured on a page.

A video must always be closed-captioned; if it is not, it is inaccessible, and therefore not allowed on the website.

A video page must also always contain body text to summarize the video’s purpose and intent – this should be more specific than the caption, and should not duplicate the overall summary at the top of the page. The content within the body text helps SEO as well as accessibility and will provide the user with better context / more possibility of being found in search results.

Note the following with the below wireframe – the mandatory summary, full-column video, and the body text. Always remember that your video must be accessible (closed-captioned).

You are welcome to use the right column next to the body text for supporting content (e.g. a featured callout, a related content matrix).

Multiple Videos Per Page Wireframe

Multiple videos on a page puts a lot of burden on the user to (1) process the amount of information and (2) download video assets. Therefore, multiple videos on a page is generally dissuaded. Ensure that all of your videos are closed-captioned.

In instances where multiple videos (of the same topic/purpose) need to be featured on one insight page, use the following wireframe for guidance. Note that there are body text components separating video content so that we are not just listing videos without any context. Remember, the body text helps with accessibility and SEO, and this is important to have our results found in search engines.

If you are using multiple videos on the page, try to limit the more complex modules at the bottom. Consider text-based related modules (like the related insights matrix) over modules like the carousel, which load full-size images and put a lot of burden on the user’s connection.

Video Playlist Wireframe

Playlists contain two or more videos, both of which must be closed-captioned. Use the following wireframe to set up a playlist page.

The body text component describing what the playlist is, what the content relates to, and how it all ties together is incredibly important for SEO and accessibility.
